Dachshund Expert Guide & FAQ: Choosing the Best Collar, Bed, Lead & Accessories

What collar width suits a Dachshund?

A collar approximately 2 cm (0.8 inches) wide generally suits a Standard Dachshund. This provides suitable strength without feeling excessively heavy or bulky around the dog’s neck, but they can also wear up to 2.5cm width of dog collar.

What neck size is typical for a Dachshund?

An adult Standard Dachshund commonly has a neck measuring approximately 30–40 cm (12–16 inches). Individual dogs do vary depending on the parents, so we always advise you to measure around the neck where the collar naturally sits and allow enough room to place two fingers underneath. Does a Dachshund wear a harness or collar?

A collar is suitable for identification and everyday wear and highly recommended so your dog can be identified if ever lost. For walks, some Dachshunds may benefit from a well-fitting harness that distributes pressure across the body but not essential. Always check with your vet as to what suits your particular dog. If you are opting for harness choose one that allows the shoulders to move freely and fits securely without restricting the dog’s long back or chest.

What collar size fits a Dachshund puppy?

Standard Dachshund puppies grow quickly, so their neck should be measured regularly. Choose an adjustable collar that fits securely with room for two fingers underneath. Avoid selecting an oversized adult collar for a puppy to grow into, as it may slip over the dog’s head.

Which LISH collar size is best for a Dachshund?

Most adult Standard Dachshunds fall between size medium and large. If they suit a Medium LISH collar, it's 2 cm (0.8 inches) wide and fits necks measuring 29–39 cm (11.5–15.5 inches). A dog close to the upper limit should be measured carefully before ordering.

Which lead length is best for a Dachshund?

A Medium LISH lead is generally the most suitable choice. Depending on the design, Medium leads measure approximately 100–128 cm (40–50 inches) long and 2 cm (0.8 inches) wide, providing comfortable control without being unnecessarily heavy.

Which bed is best for a Dachshund?

A Large Linen Pillow Bed, measuring 70 × 100 cm (27 × 39 inches), should provide enough room for most Standard Dachshunds to stretch out comfortably. Their long bodies make a rectangular pillow bed particularly suitable. They also benefit from the round Harris Tweed dog beds if they like to curl up in circle.

Which jumper is best for a Standard Dachshund?

A Standard Dachshund may suit a Medium when a puppy or Large LISH dog jumper if they are small for their breed , depending on its back length and chest size. Medium measures approximately 41 cm (16 inches) in back length, while Large measures approximately 47–52 cm (18.5–20.5 inches). Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail and check that the jumper does not restrict the chest or front legs.

How should you care for your Standard Dachshund accessories?

Check regularly for rubbing or matting beneath the collar, harness and jumper. Choose clothing that accommodates the Dachshund’s long body without restricting its short legs. Keep accessories dry and remove wet clothing promptly. Wipe LISH leather collars and leads with a damp cloth once any mud has dried, then allow them to dry naturally away from direct heat. Because Dachshunds can be vulnerable to back problems, help them maintain a healthy weight and limit repeated jumping from high furniture.
